Daisy Smart Target System – Finally, an electronic shooting game without a mouse

Share:

Electronic shooting games are everywhere.  Whether it’s on a phone, tablet, PC, or console, the primary means of “shooting” is to click a mouse or press a button.  The art of actually shooting, i.e., target acquisition, hold, follow through, trigger control, breathing, etc., has been all but lost.  Fortunately, Daisy has created something that may start to turn all that around.

What is the Daisy Smart Target System

Daisy Smart Target System with Red Ryder

We were fortunate to get a sneak peek at the Daisy STS a few years back, when it was still in early development.  We immediately saw the potential of the system and began brainstorming all the ways a product like this could not only be fun but also serve as a tool to promote social engagement among airgunners.

The Daisy STS comprises a target stand fitted with a wireless camera.  The camera communicates with a tablet or phone via the Daisy STS app (available for iOS and Android).  The app features a shooting gallery game along with the ability to use the system as a wireless target cam.  We’ll have another article about that later.

Monster Patrol is currently the only game in the app (more to come), and it uses special reactive targets.  The app prompts the shooter to shoot specific characters on the target, and hits and misses are recorded and scored.  Shooter can see their hits in the app.

The game has a few modes and difficulty levels.  There’s a single-person mode where the monsters are presented in waves, and the player clears them out.  There’s also a multi-shooter mode for two shooters to compete against each other.  We’d love to see this whole concept expanded so players don’t need to be physically in the same place.  Rather, friends could gather in the cloud, each having their own Daisy STS and compete virtually.

Developing skillsets

Here’s where the Daisy STS pulls away from all the other “shooting” games on the market.  Shooters actually need to have shooting skills to play.  Clicking a mouse or pressing a button on a controller isn’t going to get you very far with the Daisy STS.

Our sample kit shipped with a Daisy RedRyder BB gun.  It’s a good fit if you are shooting up close in your backyard or, provided you are using a safe backstop, in your basement or garage.  To clear the waves of monsters, you’ll need to make your shots, hitting your targets as the app calls them out.  The more you play, the more you’ll develop target acquisition skills and trigger control, along with other basic shooting skills.  Additionally, the time element adds a measure of tension to the mix.

Sure, we are talking about a game where you shoot monsters with a RedRyer.  We are not talking about using the Daisy STS for tactical SWAT training, but you do need to start somewhere, and this is a great place to start.

Where can you get one?

Currently, the Daisy STS is available at https://daisysts.com/.  There’s one game currently available that requires the associated target, which can also be purchased at Daisy.com.  We know that more options are in the pipeline, along with greater connectivity.  Be sure to visit DaisySTS.com to stay up to date on all the news and updates for this product.  We have high hopes for what Daisy will do with it in the future.
